He is currently the Program Chair of Art Education and Director of Graduate Studies in Art Education. He is serving as the Past President of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) and he was the national President of the NAEA and member of the NAEA Board of Directors.
He serves on the National Consortium for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) Leadership Team that wrote new national PreK through 12 curriculum standards for dance, media arts, music theatre, and visual arts published in 2014. He is the national Chair of the NCCAS Model Cornerstone Assessment (MCA) Team that created national core assessments in music, dance, theatre, media arts, and visual arts. The MCA team piloted these evaluations in art classrooms across the United States last spring. He also is a member of the Board of Trustees for the National Art Education Foundation. Before coming to higher education, he was a travelling elementary art teacher for 23 years in the Crawfordsville Community School Corporation.
His research interests include assessment, multiculturalism, gifted and talented education, curriculum development, and professional development of art educators. As part of the NAEA International Research in Art Education Program, Dr. Sabol led research delegations to China, India, Myanmar, Finland, and twice to Cuba, and Japan to learn about the education systems, educational policies, and models for art education in those countries and to teach educators in those countries about art education in the United States.
He has given over 250 presentations of his research at state, national, and international conferences and symposia. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the U. S. Department of Education, the National Art Education Foundation, and various other organizations in support of his research. He has over 80 peer-reviewed publications including books, book chapters and articles in professional journals..
